The city released a statement saying the mayor had the surgery on Thursday after experiencing increasing pain in his left hip for several years. Riley's physician, Dr. John McCrosson, said the surgery went well and the 70-year-old mayor should have a normal recovery.
Riley will remain in the hospital for a few days and then finish his recovery at home. The statement said the mayor expects be back in his office soon and will be in contact with his office while at home.
Riley began serving his 10th term as mayor last year. He has served as mayor longer than anyone in Charleston's almost 350-year history.
