A man who is a person of interest in several recent burglaries is downtown Charleston was taken into custody Monday, just minutes after he allegedly finished a separate burglary that hadn't yet been reported to police.
Police say about 8:45 Monday morning approached 35-year-old Maurice Watson, of Legare Road, at President Street and the Crosstown Connector in downtown Charleston. Officers asked Watson if he had any narcotics in his possession and police say Watson pulled out a Ziploc bag containing a gram of marijuana. He was also carrying a book bag with a laptop, Play Station, baseball cap and a speaker. Police say Watson told them he had just taken the items from an apartment on St. Phillip Street. Those items were returned to the victims.
Watson is charged with four counts of burglary 1st degree, four counts of property crime enhancement and count of possession of marijuana 2nd degree.
Police say Watson is charged with the April 7, 2014 burglary to a St. Phillip Street apartment, the April 15, 2014 burglary to a Cannon Street apartment and the April 25, 2014 burglary to another St. Phillip Street apartment. Laptops, purses, wallets and an iPad were taken from those apartments.
The investigation is ongoing.
