All of the lanes on Highway 78 were closed for part of the afternoon, but westbound lanes reopened about 4:45 p.m. The North Charleston Fire Department asks motorists to use caution when traveling in the area of Hwy 78 before College Park Road.

According to the North Charleston Fire Department, Charleston County Consolidated dispatch received a call for a vehicle fire at 9421 Hwy 78 at 1:34 p.m.   Ladson Wood Recycling is a landscaping and wood mulch location.  Firefighters reported a large mulch pile burning at the site. 

A statement from North Charleston Fire Department says, "The fire itself is contained to the large pile of mulch but is difficult to extinguish.  Firefighters from North Charleston Fire Department, C&B and Summerville Fire Departments are all working to extinguish the fire.

"The North Charleston Fire Department is asking people to use caution when driving in this area due to hose lines and apparatus.  Due to the nature of mulch burning, the NCFD expects to be on scene for several hours.  Mulch, of course is flammable; and the fire, once ignited, can be persistent.  It requires firefighters to dismantle the pile in order to fully extinguish the fire. "

There are no reported injuries at this incident.
