Mel Gibson Visited Patriots Point Saturday

Anyone spot Mel Gibson at Patriots Point on Saturday? The actor, director, academy award winner stopped by to learn about the USS Laffey and the attack it sustained at Okinawa in WWII.

The museum and a former USS Laffey crew member gave Gibson a tour of the destroyer. It was attacked by several bombs and kamikaze planes during the Battle of Okinawa in WWII. This battle is where the USS Laffey earned the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die!"

Mel Gibson is best known for his work in Braveheart, The Patriot, and the Lethal Weapon movies.

USS LAFFEY vets welcomed Mel Gibson aboard their ship today! The actor/director came to Charleston to learn about the ship and the attack it sustained at Okinawa in WWII. Do you know why the LAFFEY has the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die?"
