West Ashley, S.C. (WCIV) — Installation of legendary letters mark the return of a landmark grocery store at Quadrangle Shopping Center.
"I was probably in my early 20's and I could remember Piggly Wiggly," said Kenneth Scott who picked up clothing Monday from Smith Brothers Dry Cleaning near the current Bi-Lo, which is transitioning into a supermarket with shoppers who are 'Big on the Pig.'
"I think it’s a good idea because a lot of people shop at Piggly Wiggly. And a lot of people missed the store when they changed to Bi-Lo. So I think it’s a great idea," he said.
Inside Smith Brothers Dry Cleaning Store, Beth Baucom remembers when the owner of the new Piggly Wiggly store visited her,
"He came by and introduced himself. He's a very nice gentleman. He actually grew up shopping at the Piggly Wiggly here and has purchased it and is bringing it back to the community here," she said.
Baucom explains she recently moved to Charleston from Charlotte. While she's heard of the famous South Carolina supermarket, she looks forward to seeing a new neighbor.
"I honestly didn't know they were still around. So I'm glad to have it back here," she said.
While some shoppers didn't know Bi-Lo would close early to begin the transition, others like Kenneth Scott believe the change to the Pig is positive.
"It's a good tradition for the area," he said.
David Smith, the owner of the Piggly Wiggly store in Hollywood tells ABC News 4 he's busy making sure the transition goes smoothly. He expects to open business at his new Skylark Drive location on Friday morning.
