Isle of Palms, S.C. (WCIV) — A farewell by the sea, friends of Dermot O’Leary gathered to say their goodbyes at his memorial service Friday. The 18-year-old Wando High School senior died this week after a motorcycle accident.
As the waves rolled, and the wind blew, Mario Ciappa and dozens of others reflected on a life they said was well lived.
“Dermot's been my best friend for five years, I thought it'd be due to come pay my respects to him. He was the definition of a good friend. Dermot was always open to new ideas,” Ciappa said.
His friends said he a voice that was unforgettable.
“What also made him was his deep voice and great laugh,” Ciappa said.
“Dermot was a young man of few words, but a big voice,” a teacher added.
“When someone like Dermot crosses your path, it leaves an imprint and that's the affect he had on all of us,” another friend added.
They shared stories of a young man at peace when he wasn't confined to a room.
“Almost all of my memories with him are outside," a friend said.
“He was the light of our bonfires," another added.
For now, his family and friends are saying farewell.
“I'll miss him every day. I know he's in heaven with the Creator. I know that God's got you safe until the day we can meet again. I love you, Dermot,” Caippa added.
