Charleston (WCIV) — A recognized underwater munitions expert spoke about the dangers of seismic surveys. James Barton is a retired member of the U.S. Navy Bomb Squad.
He spoke about concerns around doing seismic surveys on conventional and chemical munitions, as well as radioactive waste drums dumped in the Atlantic, that includes off South Carolina's coast.
Barton was joined at the press conference by Mayor John Tecklenburg and the president of the S.C. small business chamber of commerce.
The small business chamber has opposed offshore drilling and seismic testing for oil since 2015.
It says those activities threaten the vibrant coastal economy of tourism, commercial fishing and recreation.
