4 People Killed, Including 2 Police Officers in Canada Shooting

Four people, including two police officers, were killed Friday morning in a shooting in Fredericton, a city of 60,000 in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, police said.

A suspect has been taken into custody and the situation was "contained" police said. Officials say the suspect was also being treated for 'serious' injuries, and the investigation is on-going.

Fredericton Police tweeted that they would not be releasing the names of the officers killed, and asked for consideration for their colleagues and families.

No names are being released at this time.  Please appreciate this is a difficult time for their families and our colleagues.  We will provide more info when we can.

The shooting was first reported around 7 a.m. local time in the Brookside area of the city.

"This is a developing situation and it is premature to determine whether there are any national security implications. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mountain Police) is providing support to the local Fredericton police force," said Scott Bardsley, a spokesman for Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.

During the standoff, CTV reporter Nick Moore told CTV's "Your Morning" that "police appeared to be focused on one particular residence," and that he heard four shots while standing outside.

Fredericton Police later tweeted that they had taken the suspect into custody, and that lockdowns were no longer required.

According to a report from CNN, a spokeswoman for Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital said they were treating multiple victims from the incident.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, "Awful news coming out of Fredericton. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting. We're following the situation closely."
