62,000 Pounds of Raw Meat Recalled Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

U.S. Beef Prices Hit Record Highs

If you plan on firing up the barbecue this weekend, you may want to check your freezers before you light the charcoal.

Just in time for the official start of the grilling season and Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a recall for more than 62,000 pounds of raw beef due to concerns over E. coli contamination.

According to a release from the FSIS, approximately 62,112 pounds of raw beef products from Aurora Packing Company, Inc. may be contaminated with E. coli. The raw beef products were packaged on April 19, 2019. The products being recalled including the Establishment number "EST. 788" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The recall includes more than 40 products, including cuts of steak, ribs, and brisket cuts.

Because people like to freeze cuts of meat for future use, the USDA is recommending people double check their backup freezer in case they stored some of the recalled beef in there. The agency says people should throw away the recalled meat or return it to the place of purchase.

People who may be concerned about becoming ill from the tainted beef should contact a healthcare provider, the USDA said in the statement. The form of E. coli found in the recalled beef can cause several symptoms, including dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. While most people recover within a week, some can develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Symptoms include easy bruising, pallor and decreased urine output. Persons who are experiencing those type of symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

The recall was initiated after random sampling discovered the possible E. coli contamination, the USDA said in the release. So far, there have been no reported cases of illness associated with this recall.
