Texas Man Saves Dog After Its Leash Gets Stuck In Elevator Door

A Texas man is being hailed as a hero after he saved the life of a dogJohnny Mathis was getting off the elevator at his Houston apartment complex as a woman walking her Pomeranian was getting on. While the woman stepped into the elevator, the doors closed before her dog could get inside.

"When she got on, I was looking at the dog, because it was a cute dog," Mathis told CNN. "I noticed the leash was kinda long, but I didn't think it wasn't going to make it on the elevator or anything."

Mathis looked back and noticed the dog was standing by the doors and jumped into action. He picked up the dog and unclipped it from its leash before the elevator started to go up.

"Instinct just kicked in, I just grabbed that leash," he said. "There was so much fur, that's why it took me a bit to get that lever off of the collar and when I did, I let go, you could see that leash just shoot off to the top of the elevator."

He shared surveillance video footage on Twitter after the incident.

Y’all I’m shaking!!! I just saved a dog on a leash that didn’t make it onto the elevator with the owner before the door closed! I just happened to turn around as the door closed and it started to lift off the ground I got the leash off in time😭😭

Mathis said that the woman was new to the building and likely didn't realize the elevator door closed so quickly.

“As soon as the door shut, she was screaming,” Mathis said. “There was nothing she could have done. She is new to the building, so I think she wasn’t expecting it to shut so fast.”

“I felt terrible for her. It was an honest mistake," he added.
