Woman Struck By Car While Protesting On Seattle Highway Dies

A woman who was struck by a car while protesting police brutality in Seattle on Saturday (July 4) has died. Summer Taylor was with a large group of people marching along Interstate 5 when a white Jaguar sped toward the crowd and hit Taylor and another woman, 32-year-old Diaz Love.

They were both rushed to the hospital, where Taylor died from her injuries. Love is in the intensive care unit and is listed in serious condition.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Dawit Kelete, fled the scene after striking the two women. A protester jumped into his own vehicle managed to chase down Kelete and block his vehicle until police arrived. Kelete was taken into custody and booked on two counts of vehicular assault, though those charges will likely be upgraded now that Taylor has died.

Officials have not said why Kelete drove through the crowd and were trying to determine how he got onto the highway, which had been closed for about an hour.
