The existence of two smokestacks in Downtown Charleston are in jeopardy of being demolished! The smokestacks are located at the St. Julian Devine Community Center on 1 Cooper Street in Downtown Charleston. A petition has been created by the Preservation Society of Charleston and Historic Charleston Foundation to call on The City of Charleston to halt the demolition of the smokestacks and preserve the structure as a relic of Charleston's industrial past.

After much opposition from several preservation groups, Eastside residents and many other community members, the Charleston City Council has deferred a decision on the demolition of the smokestacks for two more weeks, pending further structural review. The petition to save the smokestacks has surpassed the halfway mark of their goal of 2,500 signatures.
