The Folly Beach Fishing Pier is closing to the public on October 19, 2020 to undergo structural upgrades. The project is expected to take 28 months, and re-open in the Spring of 2023. The 1,045-foot-long pier opened in 1995 and is reaching the end of its useful life due to deterioration in the wood pilings caused by marine borers. Timber pile piers typically have an average life expectancy or 20-25 years, so it is time to update the structure with concrete. Construction is set to begin at the beginning of November 2020 following the end of Folly Beach's turtle nesting season.
