COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - Lawmakers and party officials across the Palmetto State are reacting to President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection in November.
Rep. Nancy Mace, who represents the state’s First Congressional District, released the following statement:
It doesn’t matter who Democrats put up. They have misled, lied and covered up Biden’s cognitive decline for a long time now. Kamala was part of the cover up. They all were along with their friends in the press. Following President Biden’s lead, it’s time to move forward in the best interests of our nation.
SC US Senator Tim Scott said:
‘What greater threat to democracy than a party...
...who covers up the president's health & lies for power.
…whose rhetoric incites an assassination attempt.
…who weaponizes the legal system to lock up political opponents.
Rep. Jim Clyburn, who represents the state’s Sixth Congressional District, said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee for President. Clyburn’s endorsement was essential to President Biden clinching the nomination during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
Charleston County Democratic Party Chair Sam Skardon released a statement emphasizing President Biden’s “record of accomplishments” and said the Democratic Party is ready to offer “a presidential ticket with a new generation of leaders who offer a forward-looking vision for our country, building on the exceptional progress Joe Biden has delivered.”
South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain issued a statement thanking President Biden “for his extraordinary leadership and selfless sacrifice for our nation” and said Biden’s decision “exemplifies his dedication and love for our country.”
South Carolina Republican Party Chair Drew McKissick issued a statement saying Democrats of “making Joe Biden tap out in hopes it will fix their problems” and said “Donald J. Trump will be the 47th President of the United States of America.”
