Memorial design revealed for Emanuel 9 victims

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A large crowd gathered at Mother Emanuel AME church to celebrate the church's 200th anniversary on Sunday morning.

During the service, the church introduced designs for a new memorial that will honor the victims of the Emanuel 9 tragedy.

The project includes a fountain engraved with the names of the nine victims, along with an area for prayer and reflection. The memorial architect says the process of design wasn't easy.

The opportunity to take on this project is something lead architect Michael Arab says he doesn't take lightly.

“It’s an enormous responsibility, a humbling responsibility, I’m incredibly grateful,” said Arab. "It was slow and deliberate, it’s about getting to understand people’s views, feelings, and demands for the memorial and responding to them.”

The team behind the new memorial estimates it could cost anywhere between 10 to 15 million dollars and it could be more than 3 years before the project is finished.
