Chain Businesses No Longer Allowed on Folly Beach

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Folly Beach will no longer allow chain businesses within city limits.

That’s after City Council approved an ordinance blocking any business with ten or more locations anywhere in the world from opening up in Folly Beach.

This applies to the area from the Folly River to the Atlantic Ocean, so the Harris Teeter will not be affected.

There are two chain businesses already in the banned area, Subway and a BP gas station. Those will be grandfathered in and will not have to close.

Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin said the main reason the city wanted this in place is to protect small businesses.

“I think it’s good to keep the businesses of Folly Beach, Folly Beach,” Goodwin said. “The goal is to keep mom and pop places healthy and alive.”

City staff said a handful of residents wrote in about the ordinance and all supported it.

There already is a ban on drive-thru businesses which has kept many chains away.
