NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Roper St. Francis Healthcare has announced a $1 billion investment to build a new medical campus in North Charleston.

The new campus will be located between Interstates 26 and 526 on 27 acres along Mall Drive.

“One of the great things about this area is the convenience,” Roper St. Francis Healthcare President and CEO Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi said. “There are multiple different ways to get here - from 526 to 26 - multiple exits, and so we’ve got a lot more space.”

The site of North Charleston’s old city hall will be where the new Roper Hospital will go. Just across the street is where the healthcare system plans to have its outpatient facilities, right next to the current city hall.

“The facility will have access to rapid transit, so it’s going to make it easier for people that maybe don’t have easy transportation options as others to get to our new Roper campus,” DiLisi said.

Last year, the healthcare system announced it would be relocating from its downtown location as part of its 2030 plan.

Officials expect the new campus to include a full-service hospital with a 24-hour emergency room. It will also have a new medical office building with several outpatient and specialty care facilities.

“Every June to November, we sit there and wonder, ‘When’s the next hurricane going to come through and basically shut down operations for three or four days?’ That hopefully will not be as big of an issue as a location like this,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Oliverio said.

Construction will take up to five years to complete. Until then, the healthcare system plans to continue offering medical services at its current location on the peninsula.

“This new campus will ensure our ability to continue delivering the quality care that’s been the hallmark of our brand for generations,” DiLisi said.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare will make an unprecedented investment in Lowcountry patients by building a new Roper Hospital Medical Campus in North Charleston.
