If your state has begun the transition of re-opening businesses post COVID-19 shutdowns, you may see an increase in price on your restaurant and shopping receipts. Some establishments have implemented a COVID-19 surcharge. The surcharge is to help certain businesses cover extra expenses that were inflicted due to the pandemic.
One restaurant in West Plains, Missouri, the Ozark Cafe, has added a 5% surcharge to cover for "rising food prices and diminished meat supplies". Co-owner, Heather Hughes, spoke with KY3 stating that “Every day there’s something else that they can’t get or the prices have gone up exorbitantly...".
The surcharges are reported to be temporary.
