3rd grader, Zakery Holobwicz, was welcomed back to school at Foxbank Elementary School in Berkeley County this week with the warmest welcome from his classmates. According to Zakery's mom, they found out this past August that he needed a kidney transplant. Zakery's parents had him checked out due to his slow growth, which was when they found out that his kidney function was at 17%, that he was at stage five renal failure, and was in immediate need of a kidney transplant. The Holobwicz family immediately began working with MUSC.
Zakery's mom was a match for the surgery, and saved his life by giving him her kidney. Just weeks after his surgery (which was on January 2, 2020, two days before his ninth birthday), Zakery is back in school and doing fantastic after his surgery.
