SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Summerville Town Council has passed a resolution by a vote of 5-2 to reprimand Mayor Wiley Johnson.
The resolutions says the mayor prevented staffers from doing their jobs so they can take care of his own personal needs.
The mayor says he still doesn't quite know what led up to a censorship being filed in Thursday night's council meeting.
"Well really I don't know what lead up to it," Johnson said."Only thing I know is that there was an email that was sent out from Walter Bailey asking for this to be put on tonight's agenda hours in advance...takes two councilman to do that...Aaron Brown was the other one... so you have to ask them why they did it."
Councilman Aaron Brown says the town has received complaints from employees that the mayor was difficult to work with and micromanaged staff.
He says some employees have actually left because of the mayor.
Council came up with a resolution detailing how to conduct themselves with staff but Brown says the mayor refused to sign it which led to Thursday's action.
The resolution gives Johnson ten days to sign an acknowledgement of the code of ethics and conduct.
If he doesn't, some of his leadership roles, like in the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments and as chair of the finance committee could be in jeopardy.
When asked what his response was to the resolution, the mayor said the people of Summerville elected him, not the council.
