KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A CBS News report found that lobbyists have been paying for access to expensive retreats for state attorneys general.
Those are the top law enforcement officials in each state.
One of the biggest retreats this investigation looked at happened in the Lowcountry.
It was at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Live 5 News has confirmed that South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson was at that retreat in April.
For a lobbyist to get access to the retreat, they have to pay $125,000.
Some of the companies that paid for that access are under investigation by state attorneys general.
These donations give them one-on-one access to AG's which gives them a chance to plead their case.
Kiawah Island Resort released the following statement:
We've also asked the South Carolina Attorney General a few questions.
A spokesperson said Attorney General Wilson was at the event to welcome people to his home state.
He also said public money wasn't used for the AG's travel, and the days he was there were work days.
We asked for an interview with Wilson on Friday, but we're told he'll be out of town.
