WEST ASHLEY SC (WCSC) -
A new neighborhood watch has been formed in Shadowmoss subdivision in West Ashley after break-ins to six homes in the neighborhood.
People were asleep in some of the homes that were targeted.
Sarah Sharman and her husband, Howard, have lived in Shadowmoss for three years. Sarah says they saw news about the break-ins on Facebook.
"We just said to each other this is not happening in our Charleston, this is not happening," she said.
Sarah decided to do something about it.
"I immediately posted on several different Facebook pages and websites, let's get together and have a neighborhood watch program," Sarah said.
Sarah quickly organized a community meeting Thursday night at Crosstowne Church.
"And as Forest Gump would say, just like that we have a neighborhood watch," she said.
Charleston City Councilman Harry Griffin who lives in the neighborhood got a head-start on the neighborhood watch program. Early Friday morning Griffin walked the perimeter of Shadowmoss Parkway.
Sharman says ultimately she would like to see several teams walking the streets between midnight and 5 a.m.
"Keep each other awake, keep each other inspired and just make sure everything is safe," she explained.
Folks who live in Shadowmoss say they've seen more police patrols since the break-ins.
One man wrote on Facebook, "The marked cars were patrolling the hood last night. I have video proof. It looks like they know we have an issue."
People in Shadowmoss hope the combination of the neighborhood and police patrols will keep the burglars away.
