CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Animal Society received 43 dogs and puppies from the Robeson County Animal Center in North Carolina on Tuesday.
Several animal shelters in North Carolina were severely impacted by Hurricane Florence.
Many were over capacity and had wire crates popped up everywhere.
Some of the animals were living in buildings where the roof was caving in and the water was rising.
“These dogs and puppies have been through a lot”, said Joe Elmore, CEO of Charleston Animal Society. “They are victims too.”
The animal shelter partnered with many organizations including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals to transport the animals.
This weekend the shelter will be having a free adoption event as part of a statewide effort called “Pick Me SC.”
The dogs will be examined and treated for any medical conditions. Many of the ones brought to the shelter will be available for adoption this weekend.
