SC lawmakers react to deadly shooting at Trump rally in Pennsylvania

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - South Carolina lawmakers are reacting to the deadly shooting that occurred at a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

The shooting happened Sunday afternoon during Trump’s rally in Butler, PA, and is being investigated as an attempted assassination.

Lawmakers across the Palmetto state are sharing their reactions to the shooting

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster released the following statement on social media:

The risks and forces President Trump is willing to face to serve his country are unbounded. He is the face of America’s strength today. Peggy and I join millions of others praying for his safety and security and that of his family and our country.

Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Saturday’s shooting should “horrify every freedom-loving American. Violence against presidential candidates must never be normalized.”

Rep. Jim Clyburn, who represents the state’s Sixth Congressional District, said on X that the shooting was “horrific” and there is “no room for violence of any kind in this country.”

Sen. Lindsay Graham said on X he was thankful former President Trump was okay and encouraged South Carolinians to “pray fervently for anyone who may have been injured at the rally.”

Sen. Tim Scott echoed Graham’s sentiments, stating on X he was “Praying for President Trump and everyone at the rally in Pennsylvania,” as did Rep. Nancy Mace, who represents the state’s First Congressional District.

Sen. Tim Scott later released another statement on X, accusing “the radical Left and corporate media” of “aiding and abetting” the shooting.

Charleston Mayor William Cogswell released a statement on Facebook regarding the shooting:

The appalling act of violence against President Trump in Pennsylvania is truly horrifying and deeply troubling. Our heartfelt prayers are with him and with the family of the victim who lost their life during this tragic event. It is imperative that we unite as a nation to strongly condemn all forms of violence. Regardless of our political differences, we must come together to overcome all forms and acts of hate.
