J. Elliott Summey joined the Charleston County Aviation Authority (CCAA) as Executive Director and CEO on July 1, 2020. Leveraging a successful career in economic development and land planning, including corporate relocation, Summey's executive-level experience informs CCAA in the development and implementation of its post-pandemic strategic plan, including the evaluation of revenue diversification opportunities.
Having served multiple terms on CCAA's Board of Directors, he played a key role in the state's largest airport achieving a decade of record-setting growth in air service development, passenger volume, and financial performance. He possesses a keen understanding of the industry at a macro level as well as CCAA's unique history, current operating environment, and strategic outlook.
Summey was elected to three terms on Charleston County Council. During his tenure, he served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Finance Committee Chair, Economic Development Committee Chair and a member of the Planning/Public Works and Public Safety Committees.
A life-long resident of the Lowcountry, Summey has earned a reputation as a strong leader and visionary who prioritizes employee engagement. He is adept at working effectively with local and statewide officials and has guided several major transportation infrastructure projects.
Summey is a proud graduate of the College of Charleston and is active in the community beyond his elected position. He has served on various boards including the International African American Museum, South Carolina Board of Juvenile Parole, Charleston Museum, Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, (Chair) Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), (Chair) Charleston Area Transportation Study Committee, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Regional Development Alliance and Explore Charleston. He is also a former member of the Medical University of South Carolina’s Board of Visitors. He was named as one of the region’s Top 50 Most Influential Business Leaders by Charleston Business Magazine and is a recipient of the Charleston Regional Business Journal’s 40 under 40 Award.
