Governor orders DOT to allow 2-way traffic on eastbound Wando Bridge

A day after state transportation officials announced the four-week closure of I-526 westbound between Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island for bridge repairs, Gov. Henry McMaster has ordered the S.C. Dept. of Transportation to reroute the traffic pattern on the other side of the interstate to allow two-way travel.

In a letter to S.C. DOT Secretary Christy Hall Thursday, Gov. McMaster orders the DOT to develop and execute a plan to allow for two-way traffic on the eastbound portion of the James B. Edwards Bridge over the Wando River while repairs are made.

DOT closed the westbound side of the Wando bridge Monday after discovering one of eight main support cables used to stabilize the bridge deck had ruptured. Wednesday, the DOT said a temporary repair of the cable would require keeping the bridge closed until June 11.

Neither exact details nor a timeline for the re-routing plan are finalized.
