SCDOT approves Folly Beach request to lower speed limit island-wide

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - The speed limit on Folly Beach will soon be lowered within the city limits.

Drivers will only be allowed to go 25 mph on the island after the South Carolina Department of Transportation approved the city's request to reduce the speed limit.

"The city worked with a professional engineer to support the request," city officials said in a statement. "Seeking a 25 mph speed limit has been a strategic goal for several years. The city will work with SCDOT on a timeline for the official change."

As part of a special meeting in May, the city council looked at a resolution to reduce the speed limit throughout the island. A traffic study had previously recommended most streets on Folly Beach be lowered to a 20 mph speed limit.

Currently, the speed limit for residential streets on Folly Beach is 30 mph.
