CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Kids from all across the community came to Mother Emanuel AME church for a day of learning about diversity and unity.
The event is one of many remembering the loss of the Emanuel nine.
"Everybody can be beautiful and different in a different way, and you can't judge people by their color or where they're from," said Katlyn, a middle schooler.
Camryn Singleton who lost her mother, Sharonda Singleton, three years ago in the Mother Emanuel shooting shared her story of grief to help others get through it.
"Everyone has resilience," Singleton told the kids.
Resilience is what started all this.
An opportunity to teach kids about diversity, managing tough emotions, bullying and celebrating the lives of the people who worshipped here and showed the world how to love.
"Mother Emanuel, since the tragedy has happened, has welcomed the world here," said Chelsi Howard-Conaway, the community director of Palmetto Community Action."They've hosted the world here. So, we don't want to neglect the children in our community."
Kids heard what they had to say.
"Diversity, culture, good feelings to one another," said Duncan who is starting sixth grade. "They think of this church as a really strong church that went through a lot three years ago. They used god as an answer to grieve together, and they created this wonderful program to inform kids about all the evils in the world and how to overcome them."
