Patriots Point staff teaming with SCDNR to build oyster reef near Yorktown

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is helping a team of workers at Patriots Point to build an oyster reef on Thursday.

Shell bags will be loaded on to a boat before they're taken to a nearby bank in what's expected to be a 2.5-hour process.

The reef itself will be used as a teaching tool for the Patriots Point educational programs for students. More than 30,000 students participated in the marine science courses offered by the museum in 2017, according to spokesman Chris Hauff.

The build begins at 7:45 a.m. and is part of SCDNR's oyster restoration and enhancement program. As many as 120 different marine species depend on oyster reefs at some point in their life cycle, according to Hauff.
