Hundreds gather for ground breaking at Mount Pleasant church

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

Members of the community came together Wednesday evening to break ground at the St. Andrews church in Mount Pleasant.

The church caught fire back in April when there was an electrical malfunction on the third floor.

Bishop Steve Wood thanked first responders and Mount Pleasant Town Council members for their fast action to help the church.

"The church community has been very supportive of us," said Mike Mixon, chief of the St. Andrews fire department.

Woods described the tone of the night as being filled with joy and gratitude.

At the end of the service, community leaders came together in front of the new building site with shovels in hand to take the first dig.

Woods said he anticipates cement being poured in the first week of August.
