Developer breaks ground on new building at old Sgt. Jasper site

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

After the long process to remove what some called an eyesore downtown Charleston, a developer broke ground on a new building.

The Beach Company broke ground Friday on “The Jasper”, a luxury 12-story mixed-use building to be constructed at location of the now-demolished Sergeant Jasper.

The new building will feature housing, shops and office space.

The 17-story Sergeant Jasper was built 67 years ago but sat empty for years.

After years of negotiations, city council gave the Beach Company approval for the new building.
