Mount Pleasant Police Department to upgrade body cameras

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is getting 175 new body cameras.

The department received a $62,095.55 grant from the South Carolina Department Public Safety's Body Worn Camera Fund.

The full price for all the new cameras will cost $246,612.50.

The Bids and Purchases Committee approved the purchase on Tuesday.

State law requires all officers to have them.

The body cameras the Mount Pleasant officers currently use have a life cycle of about two years but have been used for longer.

The new body cameras will integrate with their in-car camera systems so that video will automatically link together to provide evidence.

The communications manager for the town, Martine Wolfe-Miller, says this was something that wasn't happening before and this will upgrade their video collection process.

The town is expected to purchase the cameras over the next couple of weeks.
