NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) -
A soldier from North Charleston will be awarded a medal Friday for his actions in Kentucky back in May.
Sgt. 1st class Mario King will receive the soldier's medal, the highest peacetime award for heroism as a soldier. King saved a truck driver who was trapped inside his burning 18-wheeler back in May when it collided with a car and jackknifed on a Kentucky highway.
King was able to climb into the truck loaded with 8,000 gallons of fuel and save driver Doug Bowling, who is scheduled to speak at the ceremony in Fort Knox, Kentucky. King will receive the honor at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command in Fort Knox where King is a career advisor.
