As Hurricane Florence nears, 55 shelters now open across S.C.

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The edge of Florence continues to close in on the Carolinas, a reminder that it is officially time to be evacuated further inland or to a shelter.

Some of the shelters are beginning to hit their capacities, causing Red Cross leaders to keep watch on the possibility of opening more locations. If a location becomes halfway full, they make the call to open another shelter.

Cane Bay High School and the Goose Creek shelter already have close to 200 people staying in them. Only four out of fifty-five of those locations allow pets, which some families say is a huge part of which shelter they choose.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Department site lists fifty-five possible shelter options that spread across the Palmetto State.

Lake Marion High School, Cane Bay High School, and Blenheim Elementary are pet-friendly and still have a few spots available according to Red Cross shelter leaders.

Raymond Macie, a Red Cross shelter night-shift leader says being there for people who just want to keep their families and pets safe is his goal.

“You have families that come in that are scared, that have nothing, to give them a meal, a snack, a drink of water, the children games to play with to keep them busy, keeping families together and happy is what I really like to do,” Macie says.
