Isle of Palms visitors could soon start paying for parking through app

ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - Starting on Memorial Day Weekend there could be a new way to pay for parking on the Isle of Palms.

That’s because the city is looking into using an app called Flowbird where you can pay on your smartphone.

It’s still in the approval process.

Right now, there are a combination of pay stations and parking attendants on the Isle of Palms

According to the IOP Public Safety Committee agenda, if the app is implemented, Flowbird would provide ambassadors who would be on the streets showing visitors how to use it.

The app could be setup to require people to put in their license plate information so that the Beach Service officers can track who has paid and who has not.

There is a 35 cent transaction fee; the city could keep 10 cents of that fee.

Capt. Jeffrey Swain with the Isle of Palms Police Department says visitors will benefit from it.

"It's going to make it a lot easier for visitors here when they go to to the front beach section especially to pay for parking either in the lots or spots on Ocean Blvd," Swain said.

He also says the app will prevent users from having to come back to their cars to add time to the parking kiosks.

Instead, they could pay straight from their phone.

The city is still planning to keep other parking pay methods in place.
