Before you evacuate, do this quarter trick at your home.

If you plan to leave during a hurricane evacuation, it may be a good idea to place a quarter on top of a frozen cup of water before leaving.

Here's why:

A power outage can occur while you are away that you may not be aware of. The food in your freezer or refrigerator could become spoiled without you even knowing, causing potential sickness if consumed later. This quarter trick allows you to determine if a power outage occurred.

Step 1: Freeze a cup of water.

Step 2: Place a quarter on top of frozen cup of water.

Step 3: Leave in freezer while you are away.

If the quarter is still on top of the frozen cup of water, your food stayed refrigerated and will be safe to eat upon your return. If the quarter is at the bottom of the cup, the power was out for too long and foods were not refrigerated. They should be discarded. If the quarter has fallen somewhere in between the top and bottom of the cup, a short power outage occurred. Some foods may be okay, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
