Construction is underway for the new Baxter Patrick James Island Library, and it is expected to be complete and open to the public in November.

The current James Island Library branch at 1248 Camp Road will close its doors on Saturday, September 28th, to allow them to start preparing for the moving process. A moving party will take place on September 28th from 10:00AM - 12:00PM. There will be fun activities to celebrate the old branch, while attendees are able to learn more about the resources and features of the new branch. The new Baxter Patrick James Island Library will be located at 1858 South Grimball Road. The new 20,000 sq. foot library will include:

  • Study room
  • Self-check kiosks
  • Digital Media room
  • 100-seat auditorium
  • DJ stations (with turntables)
  • Teen Lounge/Gaming Room
  • Makerspace (will include creative tools including sewing machines, art materials, and more)
  • Outdoor reading spaces
  • Computer Lab
  • Cultural Path + Genealogy corner

Charleston County Public Libraries will also make frequent stops in their Bookmobile at the current location on Camp Road since the old library will close before the new one opens. James Island residents will still have convenient access to library services with the Bookmobile, which will stop at the branch on every Thursday in October except October 31st. It will be there from 3:30PM - 5:30PM, and people are able to check out and return books, and even pick up holds.
