CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The 71st running of the Southern 500, the opening round of this year's NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, is set for Sept. 6, Darlington Raceway's president said Wednesday morning.

Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp announced Cookout signed to be sponsor for this year's Southern 500 at a news conference outside the Governor's Mansion in Columbia where he praised Gov. Henry McMaster and other state leaders for their support.

The playoffs, Tharp said, would bring a series of televised events to the track and the state.

McMaster called the Southern 500 an “iconic race.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
