On Tuesday, September 29, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster approved the Firefighter Cancer Healthcare Benefits Plan, signing the bill into law. Approved from the Senate earlier this year, the bill was created to help provide support to South Carolina firefighters who are diagnosed with one of several types of cancer. Now under law, firefighters will receive a one-time payment of $20,000 upon diagnosis followed by $12,000 a year to help cover out-of-pocket medical expenses.

If the unthinkable happens and a South Carolina firefighter dies from cancer, the family would receive $75,000.
