CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County school board approved an academic calendar for the 2021-2022 school year.

The board selected Option A which recommends the 2022 spring break the week of April 11 through April 15. The district also added Feb. 18 as an early release day and switched another release day to Sept. 24.

The academic year will start on Aug. 18, 2021 and end June 2, 2022.

The decision came after the school district asked parents, students, and employees to look over two calendar drafts and provide feedback.

School board members said they took all the comments into consideration before deciding.

“In that calendar we took a lot of consideration, in particular with our neighboring districts trying to mirror days that school districts are out, trying to incorporate professional development days, eLearning days, and trying to make sure we’re within the guidelines of state laws,” School board chair Rev. Dr. Eric Mack said.

State law does require schools to start back in the third week of August usually, but the start date was extended by three weeks this past fall because of the pandemic.

During Monday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait said the district will offer virtual options for Kindergarten through eighth grade students and high-schoolers next year.

“We want to continue the high school offerings indefinitely. We know we will need to offer K-8 next year. We are currently in conversations with some of our neighboring districts to see whether we can join forces to offer higher quality virtual options and reduce the amount we’re each spending for each teacher,” Postlewait said.

Postlewait said district officials are still trying to get information about what the virtual options will look like and expect to bring more details to the school board in March.
