Lowcountry man accused of deadly machete “hacking” in N. Charleston

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner has named the victim who police say was “hacked” to death with a machete Wednesday. David Carter, 57, of Charleston, reportedly died from “sharp force injuries” he sustained during the altercation. Tyrone Clayton Campbell, 33, Summerville, is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Officers were called to a construction site at 3471 Trade Center Court off of Palmetto Commerce Parkway just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, police spokesperson Harve Jacobs said. Investigators said Campbell and the victim were temporary employees of the company and got into an argument. Campbell then stood over the victim and swung the machete around. Jacobs said when Campbell was approached by police, he pulled the weapon out of his bag, refusing to drop it. Officers used a Taser to subdue him.

Campbell was booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
